Ikea Kitchen Renovation Part 1

Before this kitchen had not been updated since the 50’s, between the linoleum floors, fake kitchen island and the box tube fluorescent lighting it was a mess. We used little touches to disguise the fact that it's an "Ikea" kitchen by retrofitting their standard stock kitchen cabinets. Don't ask me why but Ikea does not give you any other option for an upper corner cabinet than their standard angled wall cabinet. I am not a huge fan of the angled cabinet, so in all the Ikea kitchens I work on I have my contractor’s retrofit upper cabinets so the doors meet at a right angle, mirroring the base corner cabinet. Another small detail we did here was instead of relying solely on the Ikea white refrigerator panel, we added three of the Lidingo doors to the side panel to give the fridge a dressier built in look. We did the same thing with the Kitchenaid dishwasher, and used a door front as the cover panel so it blends in with the base cabinetry. Lastly since Ikea does not make a good trash can pull out (seriously how hard is this?) option, so I had the contractors retrofit a 24" base cabinet (to the left of the sink) so that you simply pull out the two doors and there is a spot for two trash cans and two recycle bins.

  2. We'll be planning a kitchen Reno in the next year or so, so I'm already noting some ideas. I didn't think Ikea products would allow you to work in custom panels for appliances, like you did with the dishwasher. I'd be interested in more info on how you did it.

    1. Hi Alison,

Ikea not only has the option to do the custom panels for Dishwashers, they sell dishwashers there that will accommodate the panel, which is essentially just a door front. We did not use ikea appliances, but they have come a long way in the kitchen department!

  6. Nice area for the dining table! White paint with dark counter top and a wooden floor is a perfect match. I am quite impress by how you choose your lighting. They have a minimalist tone to them and soft because the walls are already bright. The huge windows are enough to give you light whenever you want as well. Congratulations for a job well done!

  7. Hi there! I love the extra touches you added to customize the ikea kitchen, like the fridge and dishwasher panels. We'll be doing a kitchen reno in the next year, and we may look to customize an ikea kitchen, too. When you say you had your contractor retrofit the doors for trash bins, what exactly did he do? The doors no longer open independently, right?
Inquiring minds want more deets! ;)
    Thanks,
    Alison

  9. Lovely kitchen! Do you know what size cabinet you used for your sink, and did you have to "hack" it in any way to make it fit? Thanks in advance!

    1. Yes we used a 30" wide sink, but we had to use different doors (shorter ones that were meant for an upper fan cabinet) to accommodate the farmhouse apron front sink.

  10. Love your kitchen and wondering if mine is wide enough to accommodate your garbage can idea and a dishwasher. What are the dimensions of your kitchen?
